On 4 June 1962, revolutionary pan-African leader and first president of Ghana Kwame Nkrumah (1909-1972) spoke about skinfolk who betray the struggle for liberation. During a conference in Accra for African freedom fighters, he said that imperialists ‘operate from European and African centres, using agents who I am ashamed to say, are often unpatriotic sons of Africa.’ He added that they buy ‘personal satisfactions with the betrayal of their countries’ safety and integrity.’ These words remain as relevant today as they were over 60 years ago.
