Malcolm X's trips abroad after separating from the Nation of Islam fundamentally changed him, exchanging the small-world Americentrism with a larger world view. His transition from a civil rights crusader to a human rights advocate was born out of the realization that racism was more an economic problem than a spiritual one, identifying capitalism's lust for money and power as the cornerstone of racist policies like imperialism and colonialism. These phenomena were not unique to America. Indeed, they were international concerns. Hence, the transformation of Malcolm X from American racial rabble-rouser to international human rights advocate and dare I say, statesman?
