Chapter 8: The University:
Joel and Ellie arrive at the University of Eastern Colorado, a sprawling, overgrown campus once used by the Fireflies. They ride in on horseback, cautiously navigating through the crumbling buildings and deserted grounds in search of answers. Close encounters with clickers and infected throughout the dorms and library, until they get to the gated off science building. Clues left behind reveal the Fireflies have relocated to a hospital in Salt Lake City. As they push deeper, they’re ambushed by a group of raiders occupying the campus. After a brutal series of shootouts, the situation turns dire—Joel falls from a second-story balcony and is impaled on exposed rebar. Wounded and barely conscious, he fights through the pain to escape with Ellie’s help. The pair barely manage to flee the university grounds, but Joel’s condition rapidly deteriorates, and Ellie is left to take charge as winter sets in.

Chapter 9: Lakeside Resort:
Winter blankets the landscape in snow as Ellie hunts a deer through the forest, desperate to keep Joel alive. Her pursuit leads to a tense encounter with David, a soft-spoken but unnerving stranger who offers medicine in exchange for shelter. Though seemingly kind at first, David’s true nature is revealed—he’s the leader of a cannibalistic group that has been hunting Ellie. After a brutal standoff with infected in a nearby mining building, Ellie and David briefly work together before he captures her. Locked in a cage within the group’s compound, Ellie discovers the horrifying truth about their resort town’s food supply. She attempts to escape multiple times—killing several guards and navigating the snowy streets—but is eventually cornered and dragged to the steakhouse for execution. Meanwhile, Joel—weak but driven—wakes and pushes himself through the cold, interrogating and torturing David’s men to find out where Ellie’s being held. As a snowstorm engulfs the town, Ellie fights for her life in the burning restaurant, ultimately stabbing David to death in a savage, harrowing encounter. Joel arrives just in time to pull her from the flames, holding her close as she trembles—utterly broken by the trauma she’s just endured.
