It is widely acknowledged that Dan Jordan, who passed in 2024, did much to change the climate in and around Monticello during his tenure as president. Yet despite his numerous successes, the intellectual climate took a fictive turn during his tenure. For most of his time, he played Peter Onuf's foil, and that strange partnership led to the narrative at Monticello of Jefferson the racist, hypocrite. His promise to bring "serious" scholarship to the mountain was never kept. In this video, Col. H discusses two large downward turns in the Jeffersonian narrative that occurred under Jordan's tenureship.
