A geophysicist at the Global Seismic Monitoring Center stared at his screens in disbelief. The sensors beneath the Earth's surface — the ones monitoring the molten iron core — were reading impossible numbers. Earth's temperatures had spiked by thousands of degrees, and magnetic fields were fluctuating wildly. Then he felt a rumble, it pulsed up through the bedrock, through the soles of his feet, into his bones. It was in the Earth itself, the core was shifting.
