The Global Coral Crisis – What We Learned from Mapping 1,000+ Reefs | Living Oceans Foundation
The Global Reef Expedition is the largest coral reef survey and mapping mission ever undertaken – a six-year scientific voyage that circumnavigated the globe to address the coral reef crisis. Led by the Khaled bin Sultan Living Oceans Foundation, the expedition mapped over 65,000 km² of shallow reef habitats, conducted more than 17,000 ecological surveys, and created an unprecedented baseline dataset for reef health.
This presentation, given by Alexandra Dempsey (Director of Science Management at KSLOF) at the IUCN World Conservation Congress in Marseille, highlights the critical discoveries made on the expedition – from alarming global declines in coral and fish biomass to success stories of reef resilience and community-driven conservation.
Key Topics Covered:
• The coral reef crisis – mass bleaching, overfishing, and climate change impacts
• Why coral reefs matter to biodiversity, food security, and coastal protection
• 65,000 km² of reef habitat mapping – the largest data set of its kind
• Reef health insights from 1,000+ reefs across the Atlantic, Pacific, Indian Ocean & Red Sea
• The Global Reef Expedition’s scientific, educational, and outreach approach
• Lessons learned from Palau, French Polynesia, Chagos, and more
• How the data has already shaped new marine protected areas and fishery closures
• The importance of baseline monitoring and international collaboration
• Partnership with NASA to expand reef mapping through new technology
• A global call to action for coral reef conservation and resilience planning
