Throughout our history a device meant to prevent confusion has been used to promote it, instead.

This confusion is based on a simple difference in language conventions.

In English, Proper Nouns, including our names, are capitalized, and they appear overall in Upper and Lower Case: John Paul Engstrom, or Ann Margaret Clark, follow the same convention as Saint Paul, Minnesota. This "style convention" assigns no particular social or political or caste system implication, except that when the definite article "the" is included in the Proper Name, as in "The United States", it does imply singularity, that is, we are the one and only United States.

In Latin, at least since the days of Emperor Justinian, the naming convention is dual purpose, with different style conventions implying the political status or seniority of the person or thing being named.

The patrician class of Romans was named using all small letters: thus, josephus flavius gaius was a patrician class Roman; while Josephus Flavius Gaius was an indentured servant (or military officer or political official), and JOSEPHUS FLAVIUS GAIUS was a slave, because of debt, or crime, or being subject to conquest.

Thus, in English, The United States is simply a Proper Name standing for our country as a whole, while "the United States" might mean anything, but has traditionally meant a business or incorporated entity called the United States.

However, please notice --- in Latin, "the United States" indicates superior authority or power, while in English, "the United States" indicates a lesser or less defined entity of lesser authority.

Romans seeing "the United States" assume that they are talking to the superior power, while Americans and Englishmen assume the opposite.

As English is our official language, the Americans and Englishmen would be right in their interpretation of the situation.

The United States is the proper name of our country and The United States of America is the proper name of our Federation of States.
