Speaking immediately after his inaugural mass on Sunday, Pope Leo XIV pledged to safeguard the Catholic Church’s teachings but urged it to face modern challenges head on.

Addressing the thousands gathered in St. Peter’s Square, Leo emphasized the need for the 1.4-billion-member church to remain rooted in tradition without becoming insular. He also warned against the centralization of power within the papacy.

He added that he hoped to be a servant to the faithful through the two dimensions of love and unity – an important message given the polarization both within the Catholic Church and the greater international community.

Sunday’s mass marks the official start of new pontiff’s papacy.
