Alan DiDio’s recent post claiming that spiritual leaders, parents, and pastors should be regarded as “the voice of God”—so long as their instruction isn’t immoral, illegal, or unethical—is not only theologically reckless, it betrays a deep misunderstanding of how to read Scripture in context.

To equate fallible human beings with God’s voice is not just an overreach; it is spiritually manipulative. Scripture never teaches believers to equate church authority with divine utterance. And framing this as “standard orthodoxy” is a distortion of both historical doctrine and biblical exegesis.

Let’s clarify something critical: Romans 13 has often been misused by figures like Jimmy Evans to suggest blind submission to church or governmental authorities. Romans 13 is specifically addressing civil government—paying taxes, maintaining order, and submitting to rulers in the context of civic life, not spiritual authority in the church.

It was written to a Roman world under imperial rule to encourage believers to live peaceably. Nowhere in Romans 13 does Paul imply that pastors, parents, or spiritual mentors are to be treated as infallible oracles. The abuse of this passage to justify spiritual authoritarianism is both lazy and dangerous.

Similarly, Hebrews 13:17 speaks about submitting to spiritual leaders, but this is in the context of trustworthy shepherds who watch over your souls. It presumes leaders who are accountable to Christ and grounded in the Word.It does not say they are the voice of God.

There is a massive difference between respecting authority and equating it with divine speech. God’s voice is revealed in Scripture and, by the Spirit, confirmed in the mouths of many—not just a pulpit elite.

To conflate human leadership with the infallible authority of God is to trample on the principle of sola scriptura and invite abuse in the name of spiritual order. The irony here is that the same leaders who say “test everything” (1 Thess. 5:21) often don’t want to be tested themselves.

But Scripture is crystal clear: we are not just allowed to test our leaders—we are commanded to. The Bereans in Acts 17:11 were praised for testing Paul’s teachings against Scripture.

If Paul himself was not above scrutiny, how much more should today's pastors be open to examination?Elevating a human voice to divine status is how cults begin. This isn’t accountability. It’s idolatry wrapped in church branding.

As someone who affirms biblical continuationism, I believe fully in the gifts of the Holy Spirit.First Corinthians 12 makes clear that these gifts—prophecy, wisdom, discernment, tongues, and more—are given to the whole body for the common good.

No single voice owns the Spirit. No pastor, prophet, or parent has a monopoly on divine communication.The idea that only “leaders” are hearing God and that the rest of us must submit to them as if they are God is not only unscriptural, it is anti-Pentecostal and undermines the very foundation of spiritual gifts given to all believers.

Alan DiDio’s post is not an expression of biblical authority. It is a display of biblical illiteracy—an authoritarian mindset disguised as spiritual leadership.

The Church has seen this before: from the Roman papacy to the Shepherding Movement, from Mars Hill to Gothard’s IBLP. When leaders are no longer accountable, when their word becomes untouchable, and when dissent is called rebellion against God Himself, you are no longer shepherding—you are controlling.

God speaks through His Word, by His Spirit, and through a multitude of voices—not through unchecked personalities elevated to divine status.

If Alan doesn’t understand that, he has no business teaching the Bible publicly.
