Severe storms across parts of the U.S. South and Midwest have left at least 23 people dead.

Kentucky Gov. Andy Beshear said Saturday that a reported tornado killed 14 people in the state, adding that the death toll is expected to rise. Sheriff John Root confirmed several injuries in Laurel County, where the suspected tornado touched down just before midnight.

“I couldn't see the tail or nothing. It was like it was lifting everything up,” said Leo Radnour, a Morganfield, KY resident.

As of Saturday morning, the National Weather Service hadn't confirmed whether a tornado had hit the area. Seven people were killed in Missouri and two in Virginia as the same storm system swept through those regions.
