Trump’s UNHINGED Plan for Gaza Shocks Everyone!
Right, so Donald Trump is back to planning the mass deportation of the people of Gaza again, this time with dreams of turning Gaza into what he is calling a Freedom Zone, but the only freedom for the people of Gaza it seems is to be liberated from their own land.
The problem previously for Trump and his dreams of Gaza-Lago, which this plan smacks of to, referred to in the language of real estate, has always been where is he going to send the two million people living in Gaza, but he might now have found the answer to half of them, though exactly how he’d manage to deliver on this logistically is another matter.
Trump’s latest colonialist ambition to shape Gaza in his own image
now apparently involves the mass displacement of up to one million Palestinians from Gaza to Libya, still the scene of civil war and decimation it was pretty much left in following the western led assault and end to the Gaddafi led government in 2011 and the scene of much increased fighting in just the last week just to prove that point.
The proposal, which is now allegedly in advanced stages of negotiation, demonstrates not only an ongoing abject disregard for international law by Trump, but the callous dismissal of Palestinian sovereignty and human dignity along with it. It is fanatically unworkable, but given these plans are running alongside Israel’s big push to take over Gaza under Operation Gideon’s Chariot’, it seems we might be at the point where those making these decisions no longer care where the people of Gaza go, refusing to countenance their right to the land they live in, just as long as they do.
Right, so according to reports, the Trump administration has offered Libya billions of dollars in frozen Gaddafi-era assets in exchange for accepting this mass influx of Palestinians. This raises a whole litany of moral, legal, logistical, and humanitarian red flags, not the least of which is the fact that Libya itself is a war-torn state barely held together by tenuous ceasefires and scrappy governance.
Trump’s purported vision to create a Freedom Zone in Gaza is not new, it’s basically the same plan as last time, dressed up in new clothing. In the past, he floated similar displacement plans targeting Sudan, Somalia, and even Somaliland—all of these places hammered by war and division in their own rights and it is still displacement meeting the terms of what constitutes a genocide in and of itself, quite aside from everything else that has happened to the people of Gaza. That these ideas persist despite overwhelming humanitarian, ethical, and logistical concerns is a testament to how far removed the Trumpian worldview is from not only the lived realities of those it seeks to reshape, but any form of reality full stop. He is deranged and these new proposals amount to little more than the same ethnic cleansing masked as diplomacy he was bleating about a few months back.
Then of course we have to bring Israel into this picture. Recent reports indicate that Israel is fully aware—and supportive—of Trump’s plan. Well of course they are, they were last time. They don’t care where the people of Gaza go, as long as they do, they want the land and given that Israel has now launched its final military offensive against Gaza, dubbed Operation Gideon’s Chariots, what they are doing in deeds match Trump’s rhetoric in words. The operation has been marked by relentless bombardments and the ongoing severe restrictions on the entry of food, water, and medicine—clear violations of the Geneva Conventions as these are, but who is standing up for them right now?
Human Rights Watch have called this out in an excoriating piece, showing exactly what states should be doing, but blatantly aren’t, an excerpt reading:
‘The organization said that when coupled with the systematic destruction of homes, schools, hospitals, and water and sanitation facilities, as well as the use of starvation as a weapon of war—acts that amount to war crimes, crimes against humanity including extermination, and acts of genocide—these plans trigger the “duty to prevent” under the Genocide Convention.
For the 153 states that are parties to it, the duty to prevent genocide arises as soon as a state learns, or should normally have learned, of a serious risk that genocide may be committed,” HRW stated.
It pointed out that a “definitive determination that genocide is already underway is not required,” as Human Rights Watch set out in an April 2025 intervention in a case currently before the UK courts challenging the UK government’s decision to continue to license military equipment used by Israeli forces in Gaza.’
Where is the action? Yemen’s Houthis are basically carrying the weight of the world in that regard right now, but the action should be in sanctioning Israel into the floor until they pack up and go home. Nobody is calling for it, instead the media still gives voice to quisling hand-wringers bleating about Israel’s right to defend itself as they continue marching Gaza into the history books, before any of them will admit Palestinians have that right to and all the more so since they live under Israeli occupation, actually negating Israel’s self defence excuse.
The people have no balls to sanction Israel, to stand against them, they are useless therefore, they couldn’t couldn’t hit a cow’s a*se with a banjo.
But even if you take the ridiculous idea of relocating displaced Palestinians to Libya on face value as presented by Trump, it is fundamentally flawed, not to mention perilous. Libya is currently embroiled as it has been for well over a decade in internal conflict, with rival governments vying for power. The capital, Tripoli, has recently been the scene of renewed violence following the assassination of the powerful militia leader Abdelghani al-Kikli, also known as Gheniwa.
Here’s an excerpt from Press TV, which puts what has happened in the last week into the context of Libya since the fall of Gaddafi, it explains it all rather well:
‘Fighting between forces loyal to Prime Minister Abdulhamid Dbeibah and rival militias has left at least six people dead and dozens wounded over the past three days.
Clashes first erupted on Monday following the killing of major militant chief Abdelghani al-Kikli and the sudden defeat of his Stabilization Support Apparatus (SSA) group by the 444 Brigade, a force aligned with Dbeibah.
The following day, the UN-recognized government said it had begun asserting control. A ceasefire also came into effect across Tripoli on Wednesday.
Media reports citing eyewitnesses, however, said the fighting continued as SSA loyalists said Kikli's death "only strengthens our resolve to relentlessly pursue those involved wherever they are."
The IOM called on the fighting sides to cease hostilities at once to prevent a humanitarian crisis, saying it is "alarmed by the recent escalation of violence" and the "severe risk of mass displacement and danger to civilians."
Media reports said it was the worst fighting in years, sparking fears the North African nation will be dragged into widespread conflict as the government cracks down on rival militias.
Since the Western-backed revolt that toppled and killed longtime leader Muammar Gaddafi in 2011, the North African country has been split between the UN-recognized government in Tripoli, led by Dbeibah, and the rival Tobruk-based government in the east, controlled by General Khalifa Haftar, commander of the Libyan National Army (LNA).’
So you have an officially recognised government in Tripoli, versus an unrecognised military government located in Benghazi, and militias besides, like Kikli’s SSA, there is no stability, because the west left Libya in a total mess.
Now, the officially recognised Prime Minister Abdul Hamid Dbeibah has restored calm for now, but the resignations of key ministers and widespread protests continuing in the aftermath, suggest that the situation remains dangerously volatile and indeed schools, hospitals and the airport remain closed for fear of another escalation. Now drop 1 million Palestinians into the middle of that. That is what Trump is negotiating.
Besides, just because one side is officially recognised, what if you don’t talk to the other side too? Who exactly is the US best placed to be negotiating with? The internationally recognized Government of National Unity, or the rival factions controlling large swaths of Libyan territory? Where are the Palestinians going to go? Who’s territory is that? For how long? What guarantees of safety can there be? On top of that, we have Middle Eastern interference going on too, backing different sides. Turkey, for example support the Government of National Unity, the recognised one, but the UAE as another example backing the Benghazi based military force of General Haftar and actually as this image shows, they hold the majority of Libyan territory here right now.
The plan to forcibly relocate up to a million people is not just morally indefensible—it’s also logistically implausible. The cost of such an operation would be astronomical, not to mention the complexity of safely and securely transporting people from a war zone to another failed state. Trump has already faced judicial setbacks in attempting to deport immigrants from the US to Libya incidentally, a Federal Court judge has blocked it, so how can he pull this off for half the population of Gaza when its illegal from the get go?
Moreover, Palestinians have expressed over and over that they have no desire to leave their homeland. Forcible displacement under these conditions constitutes a war crime under the Rome Statute and the Geneva Conventions. In the US, the Council on American-Islamic Relations, or CAIR has denounced the plan as a historic crime against humanity, which it obviously is and I’m sure they won’t be the last to say so.
Hamas was also reportedly blindsided by these discussions. In a statement that they’ve put out, it turns out that trump was back in their bad books already even before this announcement. Hamas confirmed that Trump envoy Steve Witkoff had previously promised to lift the Gaza aid blockade as part of the deal in exchange for the release of American hostage Edan Alexander. That promise has now been broken, what a sick thing to go and do, Trump administration for you though, further eroding any semblance of trust in US-mediated negotiations, especially while Trump remains in charge.
As Israel continues to implement Operation Gideon’s Chariots and escalate its ambitions to illegally seize and settle even more occupied Palestinian land the inaction just emboldens them to go even further.
The displacement of Palestinians to Libya would also exacerbate the migrant crisis in Europe. Libya has long been a key departure point for migrants crossing the Mediterranean since Gaddafi’s fall especially, a situation documented in the 2022 US. State Department’s Trafficking in Persons Report, but I suppose these migrants aren’t going to be Trump’s issue to deal with are they? Increasing the population in Libya by 1 million, that’s increasing the population by a sixth, under such chaotic conditions as that country is in, would almost guarantee to see more desperate people funnelled into already-overburdened migration routes to Europe. This would have far-reaching consequences, we know about those here in the UK, its never off our screens, we have Keir Starmer invoking his inner Enoch Powell over such things, irregular migration painted as illegal migration as it repeatedly is, yet this is not the case.
Trump's plan has nothing to do with resolving conflict and more about rebranding occupation as opportunity for him, whilst getting a whinging Benjamin Netanyahu off his back somewhat.
The Israeli government’s own post-Hamas strategy, as laid out in a recently reported 32-page academic paper titled “Gaza Security and Recovery Program, How Should The Day After Look Like,” confirms these intentions. Authored by the Israel Defense and Security Forum, the document outlines plans for full military and administrative control over Gaza, essentially turning it into a client territory under permanent Israeli occupation.
This plan, just like the last one to displace the people of Gaza needs to end up in the bin, the worry is that this time it won’t if billions of dollars of frozen Libyan cash is enough to bribe one or other of two rival governments in Libya right now, because with the world still sitting on its hands and doing nothing to stop it, what is stopping Israel and Trump becoming further emboldened and making this plan a reality?
For as much as Israel seem to think they can get away with such things, that isn’t necessarily true and they’re finding this more and more when they go on holiday, not just with the risk of Israeli soldiers being pursued with arrest warrants, but a little hotel in Japan has come up with a genius way to hold people to account and elicit some self reflection into the bargain as well.
