“When a noble disciple understands the unwholesome and the root of the unwholesome, the wholesome and the root of the wholesome, they possess right view.”
—The Buddha, in the Eightfold Noble Path

Lama Dawa Zangpo’s Commentary:
The Buddha includes what is called right view, and by this he is talking about. Understanding cause and effect, what we commonly call karma. And the Buddha made it very clear on many occasions that doing good for oneself and for others leads to happiness, and doing things that are not good leads to. Unhappiness and what we call suffering. What does he mean by wholesome or positive actions and unwholesome or negative actions? Basically things that are self-centered, selfish, greedy. These are unwholesome things, things that are positive. Thinking of others, kind and compassionate. Those are positive actions, so it's pretty clear-cut. The Buddha's just reminding us that right view is very important to hold on to at all times.
