Featuring Mephistopheles and The Student of Prague
A single from my album ”Featuring Mephistopheles” and the ending of the 1913 silent movie ”The Student from Prague”. (Sorry for the spoiler if you intended to watch the full movie).
Featuring Mephistopheles is my first Hip Hop album. A style that is new to me creatively. I made a couple of test tracks to get comfortable with the flow in the music and the beat. Then I made the first real track but with very simple repetitive lyrics ”Summer Trance”. Then I started writing some more complicated lyrics. I decided to base the album around a lost souls arrival in Hell - and where it is greeted by Mephistopheles that has to explain to the soul where it is. The soul naturally expected to be in heaven as it always viewed itself to be flawless. Mephistopheles task is not easy - but he gradually breaks the news to the soul and tries to tell the soul about the advantages of Hell and that the way the people have lived life on Earth - by choice - actually resembles Hell. I made 12 songs about that theme that + the non themed Summer Trance track was released as an album. So I will probably feature some of them here accompanied by suitable silent movie clips.
You can find the album Featuring Mephistopheles – by Villagerobot on various streaming platforms or on my music page on You Tube.
The title of the track here is: ”In which one proudly despises”
The Student of Prague (German: Der Student von Prag, also known as A Bargain with Satan) is a 1913 German silent horror film. It is loosely based on "William Wilson", a short story by Edgar Allan Poe, the poem The December Night by Alfred de Musset, and Faust. The film was remade in 1926, under the same title The Student of Prague. Other remakes were produced in 1935 and 2004. The film stars Paul Wegener in his film debut. It is generally deemed to be the first art film in history of German movies, but the french film The Assassination of the Duke of Guise (L'assassinat du duc de Guise), produced in 1908, is the first art film in history.
It was shot at the Babelsberg Studios and on location around Prague. The film's sets were designed by the art director Robert A. Dietrich.
The orginal black and white film was Colourized by Minimalist Channel.

I make my songs by: pen & paper for the lyrics. Melodi on an old Korg PS60 and a Volca FM a drum maschine and a sequencer and some software. I sing to get the intonations I want - but then use AI to alter the voice before I master the track. It is a process I have a lot of fun with. I hope you will enjoy the result.
