There was hope Ukraine and Russia could make a breakthrough towards a ceasefire deal during their first direct peace talks in three years.

But that was derailed after Russian President Vladimir Putin skipped the proposed meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Turkey.
