'Lolita' takes place in the United States in the 1950s and is the jail diary of a European professor named Humbert Humbert (Jeremy Irons). The loss of his first love as a young person haunts him, and he has never been able to shake his attraction to young women (or "Nymphets" as he calls them). After reaching midlife, Humbert relocates to the United States, where he lives with Charlotte Haze, a friend of a friend (Melanie Griffith). Dolores, her 13-year-old daughter, is the first thing he learns about when he visits her house (Dominique Swain). He is instantly smitten with Dolores.
