"A lay follower should not engage in five types of business. Business in weapons, business in human beings, business in meat, business in intoxicants, and business in poisons."
-The Buddha.

Lama Dawa Zangpo’s Commentary:
The Buddha in his day talked about right livelihood. Right livelihood is very important because as human beings, most of us need to work in order to support ourselves and our families. And the Buddha is telling us that we can make choices about how we choose to be employed. And he's pointing out that there are certain occupations that are intrinsically harmful. They can lead to the pain and suffering of other beings. So, if we have the freedom to choose how we're going to support ourselves, we can choose occupations that are beneficial for others and ourselves, that are uplifting, that are positive, that do not have negative, you could say ethical or moral repercussions. So, this is another aspect of our life that we can take responsibility for and make conscious choices.
