Pythagorean Philosophy (Pythagoreanism & Neopythagoreanism)

Pythagoreanism is a philosophical and religious movement founded by Pythagoras of Samos in the 6th century BCE. Though Pythagoras is most famously associated with the mathematical theorem bearing his name, his teachings encompassed a wide-ranging worldview blending mathematics, metaphysics, ethics, cosmology, and spirituality. Central to Pythagorean thought was the belief that number and harmony underpin the structure of the cosmos, making the universe an intelligible, ordered whole. Pythagoreanism profoundly influenced Platonism, especially Plato’s belief in an eternal world of forms and the soul’s immortality. The Pythagoreans viewed the soul as divine and eternal, capable of reincarnation, and taught that it could be purified through philosophy, music, and a disciplined life. They lived in close-knit communities, practiced vegetarianism, and emphasized self-control, silence, and the pursuit of wisdom. Historically, Pythagoreanism marks a crucial stage in the transition from mythic to rational thought in Greek philosophy. It shaped later Neoplatonism and left a deep imprint on Western mystical, mathematical, and scientific traditions.
