The former FBI director James Comey has found himself facing an investigation after posting an image to Instagram of sea shells on the beach spelling out “86 47”.

According to the dictionary publisher Merriam-Webster, “86” means “to throw out” or “get rid of”, while 47 is commonly used to refer to President Trump, given he is the 47th president.

While the symbol was a well-known sign of resistance among some of those opposed to Trump, it has landed Comey in hot water. After taking down the post, he said he photographed the shells on the beach, “which I assumed were a political message”, adding: “I didn’t realise some folks associate those numbers with violence.”

Merriam-Webster dates the term “86” to the 1930s and says it was slang at soda counters for items that were sold out. The term has since been used in the hospitality industry and means to refuse service to someone who is already drunk.

However, 86 can be used to mean “to kill”, Merriam-Webster says, though it adds a disclaimer online. “We do not enter this sense, due to its relative recency and sparseness of use,” it says.

It is this meaning that Comey’s critics have attached to his post. Donald Trump Jr said Comey was “casually calling for my dad to be murdered”.

The former FBI director may have a strong defence if agents from the Secret Service come knocking at his door. Online, “86 47” appears widely known as a non-violent Trump resistance message.

On Amazon, those opposed to the president’s policies can buy T-shirts emblazoned with “86 47”. They come in various designs, including in a 1980s rock band style complete with a lightning bolt between the numbers.

One of the Amazon listings is described as a “subtle” anti-Trump message. On Etsy, customers can buy waterproof stickers with the numbers alongside the statement “not my president”. Various other websites sell similar merchandise.

That is unlikely to silence the outrage of Trump’s supporters, however. Many pointed to the attempted assassinations during the 2024 presidential campaign and said that Comey was, at the very least, irresponsible with his post.
