Let’s Talk! Worship Language. Recorded 5/12/2025

So, in this video I question the use of Latin in worship. I base my reasoning on practical observation and scriptural example, and I suggest how this could be addressed if I or any other visitor were to ever go to a Catholic Mass.

Pope Francis passed away April 21, 2025, the day after Easter. On May 7, the Catholic Church met in conclave to elect a new pope. The conclave concluded the next day, May 8, with the election of U. S. born Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, who took the name Pope Leo XIV. With his election, many people have speculated widely on how him being American will impact U. S. and world politics. But some people have simpler expectations and hopes.

One hope I heard expressed was for a renewed emphasis on Latin Mass. Now, I’m not Catholic, and I don’t speak Latin. I am perplexed, however, regarding why a body that calls itself the True Church would adhere to a language now centuries-dead in which to worship a Living God Who started His Church by having His Gospel introduced into the world in supernatural proclamation in all the known languages of the Roman Empire by unsophisticated but passionate followers who didn’t know the vast majority of them. The number of known languages has only increased since then, and I am convinced God speaks them all. I believe He desires and expects all of them to speak back to Him, especially in worship!

This is the Timcast IRL episode from the day Pope Leo XIV was elected. The mention of the pizza communion meme and co-host Mary Morgan’s (Pop Culture Crisis) hope concerning the Pope’s direction regarding Latin Mass occur in the first 16 minutes. At timestamp 1:46:10 begins the more in-depth discussion about pizza and Chicago treats in general.

Here is the link to the song I mentioned learning in Greek, Ise Esi O Pandodynamos Theos. I misspoke that the lyrics were subtitled in the Greek alphabet as well as Roman letters and in English, but you can see the Greek letters in a shot of the screen they used to project the PowerPoint for the audience.
