Gramsci may be a favorite communist but that’s not the point

Part 1: The WSJ headlined ‘Meet MAGA’s Favorite Communist’, implying conservative influencers and the “woke right” are using Gramsci’s playbook to fight back against the “woke left”.

Part of the problem with writing about MAGA, is that it’s a label used by many for many, whether it’s accurate or not.

We’d first have to define what MAGA, an acronym for Make America Great Again, is and without going into the history of the term, it is most important today to describe the rise and popularity of President Donald Trump, a movement that represents his position, his presidency, his promises and the people who support and voted for him.

“Trump” is a cultural, economic and perspective shift that is the result and culmination of political and geopolitical events and changes over the last number of decades. The movement and energy in alignment with him and his message may be described as MAGA. You cannot describe MAGA without including Trump.

Trump speaks to many different people and addresses many different concerns that Americans face. Agenda 47 is a bulleted list of policies that he ran on during his second campaign for the 2024 election, but his relationship with his voters started many years before. His relationship with the public, started many years before.

MAGA is not a cohort of online influencers. It’s not policy makers or Trump loyalists. It’s not pro-Trump propaganda and it’s not the laundry list of derogatory descriptions of TDS message pushers.

It’s people… and perspective. It’s also much more than that which does span broad and specific, touching areas of industry and categories like a cabinet meeting would.

Are there branches or pockets of MAGA, who focus on specific areas of interest? Sure… but lumping any one of these into a description or critique or broad brush to describe it in totality, by naming it… misses the analysis or meaning completely. It calls into question the topic suggested as even worth mentioning.

The criticism of the “woke right” seems to be presented as a counter move to the “woke left”.

Woke used to be associated with being awakened… in 2010, the bumper sticker, “Stay woke”, may have been used to remind others to be enlightened… to the world around and to self. To rise above circumstances, shed patterns of victim mentality, commune with others in a humanitarian sense.

Woke has become a word that encompasses the marketing of gender and race ideologies in a way not normal, natural or with the consent of society who for the most part do not identify with the ideas and physical manifestation of how they are distributed.

A critique of the term “woke right” will come in another segment.

For now… this critique is not for the WSJ, who is doing their own faulty labeling of MAGA and how Gramsci got wrapped up into it through one of its influencers, advocates or spokesperson. Their named character (Rufo) has his own accomplishments in the space of woke left counter hegemonic actions, which has and still proves to be necessary.

This critique is for the doubling down of the claim that MAGA’s favorite communist is Gramsci and the concerns for the use of his playbook - implying the risk to freedom of speech, the US Constitution, open dialogue and the future of society.

MAGA did not create the woke left… it did not create the unipolar, globalist, liberal world order.

Gramsci’s strategy of common sense does not apply to MAGA or ideas born from a Trump era. They are already linked and go hand in hand. Trump spoke often of a common sense approach and spoke of things most people already agreed with. The Biden administration had revealed to the majority of Americans what seems like unproductive, bad ideas that did not make society or the economy or the country better, but worse.

Trump is the common sense candidate and he overwhelming won the election in the U.S. last November…. He won all seven swing states and the popular vote.

In the age of big data analytics, what is popular and preferred is well known by those who create marketing and messaging for the masses. It’s a question of censorship and whether voices and ideas are permitted to permeate the public space with them.

We are living through a Trump presidency now, the Trump-era is in full swing. To continue a left/right dichotomy while the man with the plan versus and steadily defeats the big idea… misses the moment, the mark and dismisses the actual problems actual maga faces where woke left policies and puppeteers actually drive production for these bad ideas…in real life… their influence, although lessening, IS how we got here and jumping too quick to judging a counter to it makes it seem like a counter wasn’t necessary at all… or worse - that the worse case scenario of a counter just may succeed because of the genius and efficacy of Gramsci’s strategies.
