Ostensibly, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced his decision on Monday to appoint Eli Sharvit, a former head of the Israeli Navy, as the next head of the Shin Bet security service. His decision comes despite the petitions submitted to the High Court of Justice challenging the dismissal of the current Shin Bet director, Ronen Bar, which will be heard only on April 8.

#In fact, Netanyahu has restarted the chaos machine for which he is known. After all, this isn't a functional appointment, and it certainly wasn't made out of professional considerations or in good faith. It's a political maneuver that put all the players into an impossible situation.
That's how he operates. With a single announcement, he's managed both to needle the institutions and individuals he's clashing with – the Supreme Court, the attorney general and the outgoing Shin Bet director – while also setting a trap for the opposition and the protest movement.
He nominated a reasonable candidate who was even affiliated with the protests against the judicial overhaul, apparently so that members of his governing coalition would oppose the appointment.

That created a dilemma for the protest activists and the opposition. Should they defend Sharvit because he is being attacked over his support for the protests, or should they oppose his appointment because it was a provocation against the legal proceedings that are still underway on the issue of Bar's dismissal?
Moreover, all this is happening against the background of Qatargate, which escalated on Monday when police arrested Yonatan Urich and Eli Feldstein and summoned Netanyahu to testify in the case. From the moment Sharvit's appointment was announced, Netanyahu could relax in his chair and watch the angry reactions from every side with glee. And indeed, what hasn't happened?
The Movement for Quality Government in Israel, one of the petitioners against Bar's dismissal, issued a statement saying the announcement of Sharvit's appointment a week before the court hearing on the petitions was "an attempt to create facts on the ground."
Concurrently, members of the political center, mainly former generals, once again demonstrated their lack of political savvy when they heaped praise on the appointment while making do with a technical objection to the process, thereby legitimizing Netanyahu's disregard for the legal proceedings.
But his real "achievement" lies in his ability to spur the right to contribute to the general chaos. Coalition members assailed the appointment due to Sharvit's past opposition to the judicial overhaul. Heritage Minister Amichay Eliyahu tweeted a condemnation of Sharvit's "Kaplanist worldview," referring to the epicenter of the anti-government protests, Tel Aviv's Kaplan Street.
MK Tally Gotliv, in her own unique way, appealed to Netanyahu in a video, asking, "Mr. Prime Minister, who is whispering in your ear?" Following this, people in the Likud party and some of his close associates pressed him to retract his decision.
And the political system increasingly thinks the appointment will be rescinded – which was likely the original goal. But Netanyahu's tricks mustn't be allowed to obscure the critical point. The court needs to prevent Bar from being replaced before the multipronged investigation into Qatargate has been completed.
