Built between 1943 and 1945 near Bremen, Germany, the facility required approximately 500,000 cubic meters of concrete, 132,000 tons of cement, and 20,000 tons of steel.

The construction was overseen by Organisation Todt and relied on the forced labor of up to 12,000 prisoners of war and concentration camp inmates, with thousands perishing due to the inhumane conditions.

Despite being about 90% complete by March 1945, the bunker never became operational due to the advancing Allied forces and sustained bombing raids.

Post-war, it served various purposes, including as a storage facility for the German Navy, before being transformed into a memorial site.
