Week 16 Tutorial: King David Faces a Double Drama (2 Samuel 11–21; 1 Chronicles 20; Psalms x22)

Week 16 Readings of our 2025 Chronological Bible-in-a-Year Reading Challenge have us witness two major dramas in David's life: the infamous 'incident' concerning Bathsheba and Uriah, followed by the sins of David's sons, Amnon and Absalom.

In this tutorial, Chad suggests that these two dramas are more connected than we perhaps give them credit for, and, in both instances, reveal significant flaws in David's character—weaknesses we have not witnessed in the narrative to date.

Was David's sin with Bathsheba a willing affair? Or was this act a violent crime inflicted upon her by a man in power?

Either way, it seems that, when witnessing similar behaviour to his own in his sons, Amnon and Absalom, David cowers from confrontation. In turn, Absalom turns from his father, leads a political coup against David, and usurps his throne.

We also witness this week, yet again, the stark difference in purpose between the authors of Samuel and Chronicles, the latter of which entirely omits reference to these two 'dark moments' in David's life and legacy.
