Does Donald Trump have a foreign policy strategy? Many assume he is too disruptive to follow one. But it might not be so simple. Plenty of his actions do align with established strategic thinking – which could help us anticipate what comes next. In this video, DW’s Richard Walker unpacks three theories:
1) That Trump is a foreign policy ‘Realist’
2) That he plans to attempt a diplomatic coup known as a ‘Reverse Kissinger’
3) That he is pursuing a vision of geopolitical ‘Spheres of Influence’
Historian of US foreign policy Stephen Wertheim spells out each strategy, the goals and the risks versus rewards. And analysts Gautam Chikermane, Liana Fix, Alexander Gabuev, and Amanda Hsiao examine the consequences for the rest of the world, with a special focus on Europe, India, Russia, Ukraine, China, and Taiwan.
