"One who harms living beings is not called noble. By not harming living beings, one is called noble."
-The Buddha, in the Dhammapada

Lama Dawa Zangpo’s Commentary:
So noble means good, upright, honorable, upstanding, someone who is respected. If we cause harm, that is not a respectable thing and the Buddha here is just reminding us of a very simple truth of how things are in the world and in society. Harming beings is not good, it's not ok, and it's not noble, but those who actively don't harm beings and even go out of their way to be kind and helpful and lend a helping hand and save lives. Those beings are actually noble beings. So the Buddha's saying we're not noble because we're born with wealth or privilege or status. We are noble through our actions.
