What Really Happened When I Tried the Sugar Diet for 2 Weeks
I tried the sugar diet for two weeks to see if it would boost my energy and help me lose fat. With all the hype around this diet, I expected some pretty noticeable results but what actually happened caught me off guard.
I followed the sugar diet Monday through Friday for two weeks, sticking to very lean protein sources and keeping fat extremely low, usually under 12 grams per day. I stayed in a calorie deficit the entire time, so I was confident I’d lose some weight. But I didn’t.
Not only did the scale stay the same, but I didn’t feel as good as I normally do. The sugar diet did have some benefits, but they didn’t line up with what I was led to believe.
I first heard about the sugar diet from Cole Robinson of the Snake Diet and then saw Mark Bell talking about it too. They made it sound like a foolproof way to burn fat and feel amazing, thanks to high sugar and zero fat. Coming from a Ketovore style diet, I figured this would be a radical shift worth experimenting with. I was also familiar with Doug Graham’s 80 10 10 principles, where separating carbs from fat was key.
So I gave it an honest try. And while I did have bursts of energy and enjoyed being able to eat more food, including things like organic candy and ketchup I usually avoid, I missed fat badly. The gas was rough, and my digestion definitely took a hit.
I do think the sugar diet helps your body hold on to more glycogen, which could be useful for certain kinds of training. But overall, the results didn’t match the promises. I didn’t feel better, I didn’t lose weight, and I didn't perform better across the board.
