Cam STW speech at Funeral for 1.5

On Saturday 10th May Cambridge held a funeral for 1.5.
1.5 was a promise made by world leaders in Paris in 2015, that temperatures would not be allowed to rise beyond 1.5 C, or ‘well below 2 C’, by continuing to burn greenhouse gases. Thus preventing us from hitting earth system tipping points that would cause climate chaos.
In 2024, scientists acknowledged that the 1.5 C ambition was slipping out of reach. By some measures, it had already been breached.
