Lama Dawa Zangpo’s Commentary:
The Buddha here is saying don't have blind faith and take charge of your own life. The Buddha is empowering us. Giving us words of encouragement and letting us know that it's OK to rely on our own wisdom, our own understanding, as long as we are following the Dharma. And in this case, the Dharma is not thought of as some set of rigid teachings. But the Dharma is simply pointing at truth itself, not truth from some source of authority, but the truth of how the universe operates. Meaning everything is interdependent, everything is impermanent, and that everything has consequences, what we call karma, causes and effects. So if we use this. These universal principles or laws as our guideline, that is our refuge.
