Note: There is a way to join both the GUARDS and the MAGES.
To do so do the following!

1: Talk to Thorus and tell him you want to follow the path of Magic.
2: Talk to Milten to get access to Corristo.
3: Talk to Corristo and awnser his questions.
4: When Corristo tells you to follow him , instead go to Thorus & join the guards.
5: After joining the guards talk with Guards Trainer to get early access to Training and then go to Corristo to join the mages.
If you join the mages before talking to the guard Trainee then he won't train ya until he leaves camp.
He can teach you combat & crossbow

This way you will be able to get access to BOTH the FIRE MAGES robes & The Guards armor.
However you cannot get access to Heavy Guard Armor until late game.
There is a secret way to get access to Gomez but requires the PLAYER not switch side when retaking the Free Mine in name of the New Camp.

However you could also get armors via Control but will require lots of mana.
Do note that even with 150 mana i couldn't take the Ore Baron Armor but perhaps with 200 it's doable but i honestly doubt it :)
When controlling someone just try to loot a chest or corpse to get their inventories open :) and then just un-equip their gear and drop it on the floor or inside the chest.

Another Note: Why did it fail to pickpocket Stone?
Not enough dexterity (in a nutshell)
