Lama Dawa Zangpo’s Commentary:
So the Buddha is saying several important things here in this very brief statement. Mindful people make efforts in the right direction. We are not lazy, we are not indulging in meaningless activities, and we develop the ability to be less attached to things like Swans gliding from a lake. So to be free in ourselves, is what the Buddha is pointing to. He's showing us a way to be, to find freedom. We exert ourselves in a positive direction. We do not give in to laziness or self-indulgence, and we let go of where we are attached to things. This is the way to find true freedom within oneself.
