"Military Situation Report: Special Military Operation Update – May 9, 2025"
In accordance with the Supreme Commander-in-Chief’s directive, Russian forces have maintained strict adherence to the declared ceasefire marking the 80th anniversary of Victory Day, holding previously occupied positions from midnight May 8. Despite this, Ukrainian Armed Forces have conducted sustained offensive actions, including four attempts to breach the Russian state border in the Kursk and Belgorod regions, and fifteen separate attacks or reconnaissance-in-force across contested settlements in the Luhansk and Donetsk People’s Republics.
Along the contact line, Ukrainian units carried out an estimated 1,455 artillery, tank, and mortar strikes, 23 rocket system attacks, and over 3,500 drone strikes or ammunition drops, totaling 5,026 recorded ceasefire violations. Russian forces have responded proportionally, with command confirming continued readiness to act against further provocations by Kyiv forces.
"Pre-Ceasefire Operations (May 3–8):"
Prior to the ceasefire, Russian forces launched six group strikes using precision weapons and attack drones, targeting Ukraine’s military-industrial facilities, airfield infrastructure, weapons depots, unmanned systems control points, and temporary troop or foreign mercenary positions.
"Sectoral Breakdown of Combat Results (Past Week):"
* "North Group:"
Engaged four mechanized, two airborne assault, motorized infantry, ranger brigades, and an assault regiment, inflicting over 1,445 personnel losses. Destroyed: 10 tanks, 34 armored vehicles, 95 vehicles, 24 artillery guns, seven ammunition depots.
* "West Group:"
Liberated Lipovoe (Donetsk), damaging Ukrainian mechanized, mountain assault, airmobile, assault, territorial defense, and national guard brigades. Estimated Ukrainian losses: 1,495 personnel, two tanks, 10 armored vehicles (including US M113s), 62 vehicles, 26 artillery guns (including 12 NATO-made), eight EW stations, 14 ammunition depots.
* "South Group:"
Advanced to more favorable positions, defeating mechanized, mountain assault, motorized infantry, airmobile, special forces, and territorial defense brigades. Losses inflicted: over 1,860 personnel, one tank, 29 armored vehicles (including Bradley IFVs, M113s, HMMWVs, Canadian Senators), 48 vehicles, 33 artillery guns, two EW stations, 16 ammunition depots.
* "Center Group:"
Liberated Lysovka and Troitskoye (Donetsk), damaging mechanized, assault, airborne, ranger, marine, special forces, and national guard brigades. Enemy losses: 3,015 personnel, seven tanks (including French AMXs), 22 armored vehicles, one HIMARS launcher, 44 vehicles, 21 artillery guns (including three NATO-made).
* "East Group:"
Advanced into enemy defenses, defeating mechanized, ranger, airmobile, airborne assault, marine, and territorial defense brigades. Enemy losses: 1,255 personnel, one tank, 13 armored vehicles, 39 vehicles, 27 artillery guns (including six NATO-made), six EW stations.
* "Dnepr Group:"
Damaged mechanized, mountain assault, coastal defense, and territorial defense brigades. Ukrainian losses: over 410 personnel, three armored vehicles (including HMMWVs), one HIMARS launcher, 28 vehicles, four artillery guns, six EW stations, 11 ammunition depots.
"Air and Naval Defense:"
Russian air defense intercepted 32 JDAM bombs, 14 HIMARS rockets, eight Storm Shadow cruise missiles, nine Neptune guided missiles, and 1,615 drones. Naval aviation of the Black Sea Fleet neutralized 23 unmanned boats.
"Cumulative Losses (Since Operation Start):"
Reported Ukrainian materiel losses include 662 aircraft, 283 helicopters, 56,506 drones, 605 air defense systems, 23,249 armored vehicles, 1,560 MLRS vehicles, 24,608 artillery systems, and 35,193 specialized military vehicles.
