CRUSHING A Shifty Cop On CROSS! Karen Read Trial 2.0- (Day 13: Morning) LIVE WITH ATTORNEY ANALYSIS
SO FAR: Yesterday, Ofcr. Yuri Bukenik, Michael Proctor's superior spent all morning on direct. He testified as to additional pieces of taillight allegedly found in front of 34 Fairview that match Read's broken taillight. He also identified a black straw recovered at the scene. He introduced John's shoe (that he wore in ambulance), jeans, shirt and sweatshirt. In an embarassing moment for MSP, Bukhenik read from a police group chat where officers were talking about how they hate "Crazy" Karen Read and her lawyer and speculating about a lack of nudes on John's phone. He also testified as to still photos and video that purportedly display Read's taillight intact prior to the subject incident and broken later in the early morning/next day. Finally, he viewed security footage from Rade and O'keefe at McCarthy's and Waterfall andidentified what he believed were 9 different alcoholic beverages consumed by Read.
On CROSS. Bukenik refused to admit that Proctor was the "lead investigator" insisting he was a "case manager" while being forced to admit to Proctor's considerable involvement. He also fought about the adequacy of considering alternative suspects. Finally, Jackson hit him on the access to evidence that Proctor and Higgins had and that Higgins close friend, Chief Berkowitz, happened upon evidence that nobody else found.
WHAT TO EXPECT:
Extended cross-exam of Yuri Bukhenik and redirect.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT:
During a long and widely watched trial last year, Karen Read was prosecuted for murder in the 2022 death of her boyfriend, Boston Police Officer John O’Keefe. Allegedly a victim of hitting him with her vehicle. Read is charged with Intentional Murder, Vehicular Manslaughter (Accidental) and Leaving the scene of a "hit and run."
The trial, which included allegations of police misconduct and of a wide-ranging conspiracy among law enforcement officers to frame Read in the killing, ended in a hung jury.
BACKGROUND:
O’Keefe, 46, had been a police officer for 16 years. He was found unresponsive on a snowy January morning outside the suburban home of Brian Albert, a now-retired Boston police sergeant.
O’Keefe was pronounced dead shortly after, and the medical examiner attributed the cause to blunt force trauma to the head and hypothermia. Read, then an equity analyst who had been dating O’Keefe for two years, was arrested in connection with his death days later.
