Cervical cancer is a type of cancer that occurs in the cervix, which is the lower, narrow part of the uterus that connects to the vagina. It typically develops slowly over time, beginning with precancerous changes in the cervical cells. The primary cause of cervical cancer is a persistent infection with high-risk types of human papillomavirus (HPV), a common sexually transmitted infection. There are two main types of cervical cancer: squamous cell carcinoma, which arises from the flat cells lining the cervix and is the most common form, and adenocarcinoma, which originates from the glandular cells.
