Dark Sector was originally announced in 2000 and was meant to be one of the first fully next-gen games, pitched as a sci-fi stealth-action game set in space, heavily inspired by Metal Gear Solid and System Shock. The early concept featured a cybernetic protagonist in a sleek, futuristic setting—a far cry from the final release.

However, the concept underwent major changes over its unusually long development cycle. After years of delays and industry shifts, Digital Extremes rebooted the project, shifting it from a space setting to a gritty Eastern European environment with horror elements and a darker, more grounded tone. This new direction aligned better with the success of third-person shooters like Gears of War and Resident Evil 4.

The final game featured Hayden Tenno, a CIA black-ops agent infected with a virus that gives him control over a morphing glaive weapon. His transformation and powers form the core gameplay, combining ranged and melee combat with stealth and puzzle elements.

Despite being a mid-budget title, Dark Sector stood out for its stylized combat, visceral kills, and the now-iconic glaive weapon. It also laid the groundwork for what would eventually become Warframe—Digital Extremes' free-to-play hit that revisited some of the original Dark Sector concepts in a new form.

But we are revisiting it as I downloaded the HD mods, and set up the "Voodoo" drivers to run on modern hardware. Enjoy!
