Worn Out Waiting Blues | Psalm 119: Kaph – A Cry from the Smoke
** Psalm 119: Kaph (verses 81–88) is a cry from the deep. This stanza captures the heart of a soul stretched to the limit—worn out from waiting on God, surrounded by enemies, yet still clinging to the Word of the Lord. It's a perfect blues moment: raw, real, and reaching.
Historically, Psalm 119 is an acrostic masterpiece—each stanza following the order of the Hebrew alphabet. Kaph is the 11th letter, and in ancient Hebrew, it symbolizes the open palm, often representing submission, longing, and a reaching out for help. The psalmist, traditionally believed to be King David or another faithful worshiper, pours out deep lament in this stanza while holding fast to hope.
** Original Text – Psalm 119:81–88 (WEB):
81 My soul faints for your salvation. I hope in your word.
82 My eyes fail for your word. I say, “When will you comfort me?”
83 For I have become like a wineskin in the smoke. I don’t forget your statutes.
84 How many are the days of your servant? When will you execute judgment on those who persecute me?
85 The proud have dug pits for me, contrary to your law.
86 All of your commandments are faithful. They persecute me wrongfully. Help me!
87 They had almost wiped me from the earth, but I didn’t forsake your precepts.
88 Preserve my life according to your loving kindness, so I will obey the statutes of your mouth.
** Lyrics – Worn Out Waiting Blues
[Intro – slow, aching groove]
My soul’s worn out waitin’... waitin’ on Your Word...
My eyes fail lookin’ for Your promise, Lord...
How long, O Yahweh... how long...
[Verse 1]
My soul faints for Your salvation,
But I still hope in Your Word.
These chains of silence bind me,
But I trust in what I heard.
I’m like a wine skin in the smoke—
Dried out and barely stirred...
[Verse 2]
How many are the days of Your servant?
When will You judge my foes?
The arrogant dig their pits for me,
They break what justice knows.
They persecute me wrongfully—
But still, Your truth I chose.
[Chorus – driving but weary]
[Lord, I’m cryin’ out from this ground]
(But I won’t let go of You)
[They push me low, try to cut me down]
(But Your mercy pulls me through)
[Your commands are faithful, always true]
I was almost gone—but I still cling to You...
[Verse 3]
They’ve almost made an end of me,
But I never left Your way.
Revive me by Your lovingkindness,
Let me live another day.
Your law is my survival, Lord,
Don’t let me drift away.
[Bridge – building intensity]
Even when the wicked hunt me,
Even when I’m crushed and small—
Your Word’s a fire in my bones,
And I won’t let it fall...
[Outro – soft but resolute]
Yeah, my soul faints...
But I still hope in You...
Your Word’s my shelter...
My breakthrough comin’ through.
