ABOUT THE AUTHOR:
Ronald Okuaki Lieber’s debut poetry book, The Long Journey Out (Wipf and Stock), praised by Kirkus Reviews, was a finalist for The North American Poetry Books Award. His poems were finalists for The Knightsville Poetry Prize from The New Guard and the New Ohio Review Poetry Contest.

His poetry has been published in numerous literary publications, including: The Nation, Santa Barbara Review, The New Guard, New England Review, Green Mountain Review, Colorado Review, American Poetry Review, Alaska Quarterly Review, Blue Mountain Review, Calliope, New Ohio Review, Seneca Review, and Columbia Journal.

Born in Tokyo, Japan a few years after World War II ended, Lieber grew up under the two strong cultural lineages of his Japanese mother and his Jewish American soldier father. In the first 14 years of his life, he lived in 14 different places, eventually settling in Petersburg, Virginia.

He graduated with a BS in Biology from the College of William and Mary. After serving as a volunteer in the Peace Corps for two years in Costa Rica’s Nicoya Peninsula, he moved to New York City, where he later graduated from the MFA Program at Columbia University.

Lieber further honed his poetry through residencies at the Karolyi Foundation in Vence, France, and at The Virginia Center for Creative Arts in Sweet Briar, Virginia.

In his late 40s, he graduated from psychoanalytic training at the Center for Modern Psychoanalytic Studies. He became the director of the institute and editor of its journal, Modern Psychoanalysis.

He’s been in private practice for the past two dozen years as a licensed psychoanalyst. He recently completed a plant medicine guide training program at the Center for Medicine Work, in Philadelphia. He is also a retired professor of English at SUNY Nassau.
