Public safety in New York City hit a disturbing low this week when two NYPD officers were violently assaulted in broad daylight by a group of illegal alien teens in the iconic Times Square district. Shocking video footage captured the chaotic scene: officers trying to detain two suspects involved in what appeared to be a mugging, only to be surrounded and attacked by a mob of adolescents—many of whom are believed to be members or affiliates of the notorious Venezuelan gang Tren de Aragua (TDA).

The officers were pushed, pelted with objects, and overwhelmed by the group. Bystanders watched as lawlessness took center stage, right in the heart of Manhattan. The attackers eventually fled, but police later apprehended several suspects—including a 12-year-old boy flashing gang signs linked to the TDA.

Tren de Aragua is not your average street gang. It’s a violent criminal network born in Venezuela that now operates across Latin America and is rapidly expanding into the United States—thanks, in no small part, to the Biden administration’s open-border policies. TDA’s criminal record includes drug trafficking, human smuggling, extortion, and violent assaults. And now, it appears they’ve set their sights on U.S. cities.

The attack on NYPD is symptomatic of a broader crisis in sanctuary cities like New York, where leftist policies tie the hands of law enforcement and embolden criminals. With district attorneys frequently releasing offenders without serious charges and progressive politicians demonizing police work, the brave men and women in blue are being left to fend for themselves.

Conservatives across the country are demanding action. Congresswoman Elise Stefanik warned, “We cannot allow international gangs to operate in broad daylight on our streets. This is the direct result of open borders and weak leadership.” Many are calling not just for immediate deportation of those involved, but also for the designation of Tren de Aragua as a foreign terrorist organization.
