Ezra was planning a trip to return from Babylon to Jerusalem the Temple was being rebuilt and was almost finished.

He had been telling the king how great and powerful the God of the Jews was, and this probably aided in his decision to allow them to rebuild the temple at Jerusalem..

The King had given Ezra and the priests vast amounts of Gold and silver for the temple.

He even went into the storehouses of Babylon and got out all the treasures that Nebuchadnezzar had taken from Jerusalem 70 years prior to the destruction of Jerusalem and gave them to Ezra to take back.

So now Ezra and his band of priests have this vast amount of wealth and they have to journey through some very hostile country, 671 miles.

Then all the sudden Ezra came to realize, how can I go to the King and ask for solders to protect us after all the bragging I did about God?

Ezr 8:22 For I was ashamed to require of the king a band of soldiers and horsemen to help us against the enemy in the way: because we had spoken unto the king, saying, The hand of our God is upon all them for good that seek him; but his power and his wrath is against all them that forsake him.
Ezr 8:23 So we fasted and besought our God for this: and he was intreated of us. (Fear is overcome by prayer)

Ezra 8:31 Then we departed from the river of Ahava on the twelfth day of the first month, to go unto Jerusalem: and the hand of our God was upon us, and he delivered us from the hand of the enemy, and of such as lay in wait by the way.
