Local authorities confirm destruction of Yemen’s international airport after Israeli airstrike
Tensions in the Middle East continue to rise as local Yemeni authorities have confirmed that Sanaa International Airport was completely destroyed following an airstrike carried out by the Israeli Defense Forces. The bombing, which took place in the early hours of May 7, was described by witnesses as a “high-precision surgical strike,” although footage from the scene shows widespread devastation across the airport facilities.
According to Israeli sources, the operation was a direct response to a series of drone attacks launched from Houthi-controlled territories toward southern Israel in recent days. Prime Minister Netanyahu's government has repeatedly warned that threats from any Arab territory—particularly those linked to Iran—will be met with decisive force. Israel’s Ministry of Defense claims that Houthi militias have increased their offensive operations in coordination with Hezbollah and other Iran-backed factions.
Yemeni officials, however, have condemned the bombing as “a blatant violation of international law,” accusing Israel of targeting civilian infrastructure without warning. Initial reports indicate at least 14 fatalities, including airport security personnel and maintenance workers, with dozens more injured. Search and rescue operations are ongoing amid the rubble.
Sanaa’s airport was one of Yemen’s few remaining connections to the outside world and served as a vital channel for humanitarian aid coordinated by UN agencies. Its destruction is now threatening the already fragile supply chain for medicine, food, and emergency medical assistance, putting millions of civilians at even greater risk.
The United States expressed “concern” over the events but stopped short of condemning Israel’s actions. The State Department reaffirmed Israel’s right to defend itself while urging “all parties to exercise restraint.” However, the silence from many Western powers has been seen by some analysts as tacit support for Israel’s aggressive deterrence strategy against non-state actors in the region.
Meanwhile, conservative voices in the U.S. have rallied behind Israel. Figures such as Senator Tom Cotton and Representative Lauren Boebert have called on Congress to formally back Israel’s military actions, stating that “supporting Israel is supporting Western civilization against Islamist extremism.”
This strike in Yemen once again puts the Middle East at the center of global geopolitical tension. The conflicts in Gaza, Lebanon, Syria, and now Yemen are all part of a broader confrontation between Iran and its proxies against Israel and Western strategic interests. The risk of a full-scale regional war is no longer far-fetched—it is an increasingly real possibility if de-escalation efforts fail.
