In the book of Joshua, the Israelites cross the Jordan and conquer the land of Canaan. Under the leadership of Joshua, they conquer Jericho, then wage successful campaigns in the center, south, and north of Canaan. They conquer much – but not all – of the promised land, dividing it among the twelve tribes.
