TEXTBOOK CHARGE TAKE

This clip shows our center, Sam Kamer, dig-in & take a perfect charge. One of the aspects of the boys I coached over my career was their willingness to take charges. Our game high was five (5) in one (1) game.

Taking charges begins with a growth mindset. Charge taking can change the momentum of a game in just one (1) second. However, charge taking is a teachable fundamental. Players who take or attempt to take charges the incorrect way often are injured. The proper way to teach players to take a charge is to have them push back with their heels so their body lands with their behind jetted out & then to slide on the court. This alleviates wrist injuries. Additionally, once a program earns the reputation of being a team that takes a lot of charges, the officials become used to watching them carefully for them. Never a bad thing!
