MAN-TO-MAN PACKLINE DEFENDING BASKET & FLASH CUTTERS:

Throughout all of my years as a head coach, we rarely came out of our zone. However, we did practice Packline Defense 3-4 times per week.

This short clip shows #1, Noah Ranes, demonstrates how we taught our players to defend basket & flash cutters. First, the on-the-cutter must be in fundamental positioning. His spine should be facing the baseline & he is in a flat-triangle/gap patrol position with his man & the ball.

When the cutter makes his cut, his defender keeps his spine to the baseline & secures a frontal position with the cutter. This is considered controversial. Here’s the why? By utilizing this type of positioning, the on-the-cutter defender is maintaining a defensive position to still help versus penetration. As with our zone, we taught the ball handler is the most deadly player on the court. Therefore, both defenses were ball-oriented.
