Today we’re exploring the Fifth Commandment which is “Honor your father and mother.” What does that mean? God calls us to honor or respect our parents whether they are deserving of it or not. It is more like having respect of the position of being a parent even if the people don’t live up to the responsibility of the position. It is a test. If we can’t honor our father and mother on earth, how can we honor or Father in Heaven?

According to God’s word, it is the responsibility of parents to raise children in the ways of the Lord. They are to teach God’s principles continuously. This is to be done in a way that demonstrates the love of the parents for the child, which is a picture of God’s love toward us.

According to God’s word, children are to respect and honor their father and mother as a demonstration of their love for their parents. What does it mean to honor your father and mother? It means to hold them in high regard or esteem. Why is this important to God? He commanded us to do this because it benefits us. It is a commandment with a promise: “that your days may be long in the land that the LORD your God is giving you”.

Our God is a God of relationships. The first relationship we develop in our lives is the relationship with our parents. Later on in life, there is the relationship between husbands and wives. Then we have children of our own, and the cycle of relationships continues. Relationships are foundational to our existence, and God designed it that way. In fact, every one of the Ten Commandments has to do with how we relate to God, to our parents, and to other people. He is a relational God, and He made us for relationships.
