Computers, Meaning and Consciousness
Robert Worden

This talk uses simple arguments to derive a negative result: that a computer cannot be conscious. If the brain is only a neural computer, brains cannot be conscious. All information in a running computer is encoded; without decoding, it is not about any defined external thing. So a computer cannot support consciousness of external things.

To support consciousness, brains must contain something else besides neural computation. That something could be an analogue model of 3-D space. Analogue models contain information which requires no decoding, and which could be experienced in consciousness.
