Genesis 46
Jacob Seeks God's Guidance at Beersheba (v.1–4):
Before going to Egypt, Jacob stops at Beersheba to offer sacrifices to God.
God speaks to him in a vision, saying:
“Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt.”
“I will make you into a great nation there.”
“I will go down with you... and I will surely bring you back again.”
This reassures Jacob that the move aligns with God’s plan.
Jacob’s Family Travels to Egypt (v.5–7):
Jacob and all his descendants set out for Egypt in wagons sent by Pharaoh.
His family includes sons, grandsons, daughters, and granddaughters—a total migration of the entire household.
Genealogy of Jacob’s Family (v.8–27):
A detailed list of Jacob’s descendants who went to Egypt is provided, emphasizing the twelve tribes of Israel.
The total number of people (excluding daughters-in-law) is 70, symbolizing the foundational family of the nation of Israel.
Jacob and Joseph Reunited (v.28–30):
Jacob sends Judah ahead to prepare for their arrival in Goshen.
Joseph comes in his chariot to meet his father. They have an emotional reunion—Joseph weeps on Jacob’s neck.
Jacob says, “Now I am ready to die, since I have seen your face and know you are still alive.”
Preparation to Meet Pharaoh (v.31–34):
Joseph plans to introduce his family to Pharaoh.
He instructs them to say they are shepherds, since Egyptians despised shepherds—this would ensure they settle in Goshen, a fertile land suitable for livestock and slightly separate from Egyptian society.
Key Themes:
God’s Assurance in Transition:
Like Jacob, believers often face uncertainty—but God goes with us and keeps His promises.
Fulfillment of Prophecy:
God promised Abraham his descendants would be a great nation and go to a foreign land—this chapter fulfills that prophecy (Genesis 15:13–14).
Family and Reconciliation:
The emotional reunion of Jacob and Joseph illustrates the beauty of restored relationships through God's providence.
Divine Providence and Guidance:
Every detail—from dreams to famine to family roles—shows God’s hand guiding His people toward their destiny.
Application Points:
Before making major life decisions, seek God’s direction, as Jacob did.
Trust that God's plan unfolds over time, even through hardship.
Reconciliation and healing are possible when God is at the center of relationships.
God preserves and positions His people for future growth and purpose.
