Raul, the tree-climbing illegal

"An illegal immigrant fleeing from ICE climbed up a tree. His name is Raúl. He has been in the tree for the past seven hours. DHS and local police surrounded the tree. At one point, authorities deployed a ladder, and the migrant climbed even higher into the branches. When Raúl pulled out his phone, it's unclear who he was calling—maybe he was on the CBP app self-deporting. If you look closely, you can see Raúl is wearing an earring. Interesting fashion choice.

Activists eventually surrounded the tree, asking if he wanted a lawyer. Raúl is a Guatemalan national who illegally entered the country in 2013. He was deported and later re-entered at an unknown time.

We contacted Kristi Noem. She said, quote: “Let this be a warning. You can run, but you can’t hide—whether it’s in a tree or hiding in an activist judge’s house. If you are here illegally, ICE will find you, arrest you, and deport you.”
