Abraham’s Later Life and Death (v.1–11):

Abraham marries Keturah and has more children, but he gives everything to Isaac, the son of promise.

He dies at 175 years old and is buried next to Sarah in the cave of Machpelah.

God continues to bless Isaac, affirming the covenant.

Descendants of Ishmael (v.12–18):

Ishmael’s twelve sons become tribal leaders, fulfilling God's promise to make him a great nation.

Ishmael dies at 137 years old, and his descendants settle from Havilah to Shur.

The Birth of Esau and Jacob (v.19–26):

Isaac and Rebekah are married for 20 years before having children.

Rebekah, troubled by her pregnancy, prays and God reveals that two nations are in her womb, and the older will serve the younger.

Esau is born first, red and hairy; Jacob comes out grasping his heel — symbolizing future struggle.

Esau Sells His Birthright (v.27–34):

Esau grows up to be a hunter; Jacob is quieter and stays near the tents.

One day, Esau comes in hungry and sells his birthright to Jacob for a bowl of stew.

This shows Esau's impulsiveness and disregard for spiritual blessings.

Key Themes:
God’s Sovereign Choice: God chooses Jacob (the younger) over Esau, showing that His purposes are not bound by human customs.

Legacy and Covenant: Abraham's blessings continue through Isaac, pointing to God’s faithfulness across generations.

Value of Spiritual Things: Esau trades eternal blessing for temporary satisfaction — a warning about despising spiritual inheritance.

Family and Future Nations: The rivalry between Jacob and Esau begins, symbolizing the future struggles between Israel and Edom.
