Have The Houthis Just Taken Out A US Warship?
Right, so have the Houthis sent the USS Harry S Truman packing again? Have they inflicted damage upon it as has been speculated upon many times before? Well quite possibly, but may be not as much damage as the US forces have evidently brought upon themselves in what is just the latest balls up on their part in the Red Sea?
It would appear that such has been the effectiveness of the latest Houthi tactics in taking on the US warship, that they may not have seen the attack coming until it was too late, having to take such evasive manoeuvres, having to take such a sharp turn, that they lost an F-18 Jet over the side of the ship!
Aircraft carriers are not designed to swerve, they don’t do that very well and tossing a jet, together with its towing tractor overboard, the jet costing somewhere in the region of $72million is just the latest waste of money being put on show, fighting the Houthis for nobody’s benefit except Israel’s least of all to the benefit, either militarily or economically to the ordinary American’s. It’s way past time the US and their Israeli and UK allies packed up their fight against the Houthis and against Yemen and went home.
Right, so thankfully, with only once chap as I understand it having sustained minor injuries in this colossal screw up by the USS Harry S Truman, we can laugh at this one and it’s well worth a laugh as the vessel lost one of its F/A-18E Super Hornets during what have been called evasive manoeuvres against Houthi drone attacks, but lets be honest here, if they drones and missiles allegedly used had got this close to the vessel that it had to steer so hard it threw a jet off of its deck, then the Houthis had got a lot closer than they arguably should have been able to do, before anyone knew the attack was coming bringing into question the competence of the crew as well as underlining the pointlessness of US actions in the Red Sea and beyond across the Middle East. It would appear that the Houthis have been able to identify and exploit the vulnerabilities of even the most advanced naval vessels all without having any navy of their own, and it should be forcing significant questions of the United States' role in the ongoing conflicts in Yemen and Gaza from the American people who’s public money is getting blown on this nonsense and what the point of them spending billions and billions and getting nowhere despite the cost actually is.
The incident in question happened a couple of days ago, when the USS Harry S. Truman, having been caught off guard by the Houthis, lost an F/A-18E Super Hornet, along with its tow tractor, when they fell into the Red Sea during evasive manoeuvres to avoid the Houthis drone attacks. A Navy sailor, present in the cockpit for emergency procedures, managed to escape with minor injuries. Here’s an excerpt from The Aviationist detailing American woes:
‘According to a press release by the U.S. Navy, the F/A-18E was being towed in the hangar bay when the move crew lost control of the aircraft, resulting in both the Super Hornet and the tow tractor going overboard.
Sailors involved in the tow operation quickly moved clear of the area before the aircraft fell into the sea. An investigation into the incident is currently underway.
Despite the loss, the Harry S. Truman Carrier Strike Group and its embarked air wing remain fully mission capable, the Navy says.
According to some unconfirmed reports, the jet fell overboard as the carrier performed a sharp turn to evade Houthi fire.’
Now sure we can laugh at US misfortune here, but actually this incident marks the second loss of a Super Hornet from the Truman during its current deployment, following a friendly fire incident last December, where another F/A-18 was mistakenly shot down by the USS Gettysburg, another ship within its strike group. 2 jets thrown away, but we’re still not finished yet.
Back in February, the Truman collided with the Panamanian-flagged bulk carrier Besiktas-M near Port Said in Egypt. While no injuries were reported thankfully, the incident led to the relief of its commanding officer, Captain Dave Snowden after a loss of confidence in his command. Back in 2022 they lost another jet overboard as well, blamed on the weather at that time, but seas are stormy, surely aircraft carriers are designed not to drop their loads in a bit of bad weather? The Truman might have a new Captain, but judging by this latest incident it doesn’t look like things have improved much since!
The Houthis response to the strike has been carried in an article by Tehran Times, reading:
‘Brigadier General Yahya Saree, spokesperson for the Yemeni Armed Forces, stated the attack involved naval units, drones, and missile forces, which launched cruise missiles, ballistic missiles, and drones at the carrier.
Saree said the assault forced the Truman to retreat from its original position and move to the far northern area of the Red Sea.
He added that the operation was “in response to two massacres committed by the American enemy in Yemen, the first in the capital, Sanaa, and the second targeting a shelter housing African migrants in Saada Governorate, resulting in dozens of civilian casualties.”
The Yemeni Armed Forces vowed to continue targeting the carrier and any hostile warships in both the Red Sea and the Arabian Sea until U.S. aggression against Yemen ends.
In solidarity with the Palestinian people and Gaza’s resistance fighters, Yemeni drones also targeted a strategic Israeli site in the occupied Ashkelon area using a Yafa drone.
Saree affirmed that the Armed Forces will continue blocking Israeli navigation in the Red and Arabian seas and support Palestinians until the U.S.-backed genocidal war ends and the siege on Gaza is lifted.’
Since Israel collapsed the Gaza ceasefire and the Houthis resumed strikes on Israel and Israeli shipping, the United States has intensified its military campaign against the Houthi rebels in Yemen, determined to crush these dissenters and failing more and more publicly as time wears on. Of particularly note since the ceasefire ended has been the initiation of Operation Rough Rider last month. This operation has to date involved over 800 airstrikes targeting what is supposed to be Houthi infrastructure but has more often than not proven to be civilian in nature, including one one hand alleged drone manufacturing facilities and command centres, but on the other port facilities and the capital of Sanaa.
These strikes, by the very nature of where they are striking have not been without significant civilian casualties. On the same day the Truman dropped its jet, a US airstrike hit a migrant detention centre in Saada, Yemen, resulting in the deaths of at least 68 African migrants and injuring dozens more. This facility was housing migrants primarily from Ethiopia and Somalia seeking to cross Yemen into Saudi Arabia looking for work. An excerpt from The Cradle on this reading:
‘According to Yemen’s Civil Defense, at least 68 migrants were killed and at least 47 were injured in the attack. The center was housing 115 migrants.
The Interior Ministry of the Sanaa government said the shelter, located in Saada’s reserve prison, was supervised by the International Organization for Migration (IOM) and the Red Cross.
“US aircraft targeted a detention center building for Africans in Saada Correctional Facility, leaving dozens dead and wounded. A number of those injured were transferred to hospitals in the governorate. Security and paramedic teams are still trying to provide first aid to others,” Al Mayadeen’s correspondent in Yemen reported.
The National Committee for Refugee Affairs in Yemen said, “the strike on Saada’s migrant shelter is a full-fledged war crime.”’
The Houthis actions are being carried out in solidarity with the Palestinian people amidst the ongoing conflict in Gaza. They are the only nation prepared to match words with deeds and take on those aiding and abetting Israel as well as Israel itself and their attacks on Israel bound and US naval vessels are retaliation against US and Israeli atrocity in the region as Israel continues its genocide of Gaza and the US provides cover for them to carry on and their reasons for continuing to do this should not be lost on us.
In Gaza, the situation remains dire, with reports of extensive civilian casualties and alleged human rights violations, not to mention famine as food in the Strip has now virtually run out.
The protracted conflict in Yemen on top of the atrocities being meted out against the Palestinians, exacerbated by foreign military interventions, has led to one of the world's worst humanitarian crises. Civilians bear the brunt of the violence, with limited access to essential services and constant threats to their safety. In a poignant reflection, Yemeni residents have expressed a grim solace, noting that their own suffering, while severe following the war with Saudi Arabia that the country has still not recovered from fully, is still not as catastrophic as that experienced by Palestinians in Gaza.
The continuous airstrikes and military operations have devastated Yemen all over again before it had put itself back together; their infrastructure, economy, and social fabric. Yet still they support the Houthis in what they are doing, it being a question of morality for these people despite their plight.
The incident involving the USS Harry S. Truman is frankly funny, it shows how out of their depth the US are, but with that bottomless war chest they always have losing a jet or two, or three isn’t likely to stop them, but it does damn them and the more we see of the consequences of US military engagements in the Middle East, what is very much not funny is the loss of civilian life that never ever, seems to be too much, certainly not when standing up for and standing by Israel no matter what. The loss of advanced military equipment, coupled with operational mishaps and escalating civilian casualties, calls into question the efficacy and morality of current strategies, but they won’t stop. Their problem is, neither will the Houthis.
All of this has happened of course in the aftermath of the Houthis potentially being presented with an all new target after it has been revealed that Israel, working in partnership with the United Arab Emirates, have set up a radar station in Puntland, disputed territory on the African mainland between Somalia and the equally disputed breakaway state of Somaliland, to safeguard the UAE’s genocidal assistance of the Rapid Support Forces driving the civil war in Sudan, but also to spy on the Houthis for Israel, so will the Houthis stand for this, or is it simply another challenge for them to overcome? Who would put it past them quite honesty. Get all the details of that story in this video recommendation here as your suggested next watch.
