Openmovement Crowdfunding Launch

Openmovement is a Swiss non-profit formed in La Chaux-de-Fonds to make opensource hardware watch movement designs. In this video I explain why I think this is an important project. I feel very lucky to have had the opportunity to discover and discuss the project with its founder and president of the construction committee, watchmaker Roman Winiger. I hope you enjoy our brief conversation as much as I did.

If you have the means and would like to contribute the the crowdfunding campaign the link is below. Your name, along with mine and everyone else that contributes, will be engraved in the prototype that will enter the permanent collection of the MIH. The funds raised will help openmovement make the next step, which is the production of part kits. The 300K Chf mentioned in the video was raised to design the movement and also paid for the first 20 prototypes, which have already been produced.

Additionally, even if you can't afford to help out, the links to make use of the project completely for free are also included below. The openmovement link will allow you to register for a free account and download the movement designs in 3D, and the FreeCAD link will allow you to download and install the free FreeCAD software on a Mac, Linux, or Windows PC that will in turn allow you to open and play with the files. I will be doing more simple projects with FreeCAD in future videos and the openmovement movement designs are a fantastic opportunity to start to explore this software with the 3D plans for a beautiful working movement design by a master watchmaker!
