We Installed the Super Safety… and Things Got Dangerously Safe - The Shooting Academy

So picture this: it’s a mildly overcast Saturday morning. Chris wakes up, looks out the window, and says, “You know what this day needs? Freedom.” Bekah, already dressed in full range gear (and a fanny pack loaded with gummy worms and ear plugs), bursts into the room like a Marvel character with caffeine. “We’re going to the RANGE, baby!” she screams, startling the neighbor’s cat into a weeklong anxiety attack.

They roll up to the Shooting Academy in Westfield, Indiana in Chris’s 2008 Ford F-150 that smells like beef jerky and questionable decisions. The moment they step onto the gravel lot, they’re greeted by Bill, the range instructor. Bill is a man forged in gunpowder and sarcasm. His beard has its own zip code. His sunglasses haven’t been removed since 1997. He looks at Chris and Bekah, squints, and mutters, “This is gonna be a long day.”

Chris pulls out his Radical Firearms AR, freshly upgraded with the Hoffman Tactical Super Safety, which basically turns your weapon into the Chuck Norris of guns. With the Super Safety installed, it’s not just safe — it’s super safe. We’re talking “double rainbow wearing a helmet” safe. Bekah, not to be outdone, slings her AK-47 over her shoulder like she’s in a post-apocalyptic action movie. Except she’s wearing a pink hoodie with a unicorn on it. Iconic.

The shooting begins. Chris starts off by trying to act cool but accidentally bumps the Super Safety into “Tactical Chaos Mode,” which doesn’t exist, but Bill lets it slide because he wants to see what happens. Bekah, meanwhile, obliterates every target with terrifying precision, all while humming the SpongeBob theme song. Bill starts to sweat.

At one point, Chris attempts a tactical roll behind a barrel, only to discover it’s not a barrel — it’s a cooler full of expired Gatorade and old Slim Jims. Bekah takes a selfie with her AK-47 mid-mag change, hashtags it #RangeBabe, and gets 472 likes before the next round even begins.

Somewhere around hour three, Bill gives up on trying to teach them anything. “Y’all are untrainable,” he says, sipping from a mug that reads, ‘Coffee, Guns, and Mild Regret.’ “But entertaining as hell.”

After several magazine dumps, one nearly destroyed steel target, and Chris accidentally yelling “FIRE IN THE HOLE” before dropping his sunglasses, they call it a day. As they walk back to the truck, Bekah turns to Chris and says, “That was better than therapy.” Chris nods. “Yeah, except therapy doesn’t involve so much brass in my underwear.”

So what did we learn today? Guns are awesome, the Super Safety is a game-changer, Bekah is probably a secret agent, and Bill needs a raise. But mostly, we learned that with enough ammo, snacks, and chaotic energy, two wild humans can turn a quiet range day into an action movie blooper reel.
